Drop Dead Russell?

Was Drop Dead Fred really crying out for a remake? /Film reports:
Universal Pictures has announced that they are developing a remake of Drop Dead Fred for Russell Brand to star in. Saturday Night Live writer Dennis McNicholas has been hired to develop the project for Brand. McNicholas most recently wrote Land of the Lost for Will Ferrell and director Brad Silberling. THR says the plan is to remake the movie in the tone of Beetlejuice, “building a universe around the concept of imaginary friends.” Whatever that means.
Well, I can definitely see Russell Brand as a maniacal imaginary friend, but I wish he was doing something else.
UDPATE: Russell Tweeted this morning:
Drop Dead Fred - true. Arthur - true, Kinky Bible - a film I will never make.Russell in an Arthur remake is definitely something I'd like to see!

Captain Rob Sparrow?

There's a rumor going around that the part of Captain Jack Sparrow's brother in Pirates of the Caribbean 4 will not go to Russell Brand, as previously was rumored. Russell Brand's slamming of the Jonas Brothers' chastity is the tip of the iceberg as to the ways he has offended people in recent months and Disney is touchy about their brand, er, child actors. I think Russell would be perfect as Johnny Depp's brother, but this latest rumor has me excited. If Orlando Bloom is out, who's your heart throb in the movie then, to bring in all those teen girls (and their moms)? Robert Pattinson! My how his movie stardom has changed things, eh? So far this is all rumor. I'll believe it when it's printed on Nikki Finke's blog or Variety.

Russell Brand to become Arthur?
The LA Times and other outlets are buzzing about an Arthur remake. At first I groaned, as who could top Dudley Moore and Liza Minelli (not to mention John Gielguld!). But then I heard that it is being talked about for Russell Brand, and I am totally on board for that! Russell would be perfect.
Bloody brilliant, mate!
It makes total sense for Brand to play the lead role (originally Dudley Moore), a lovable, filthy rich hopeless alcoholic who falls in love with a working-class gal (Liza Minnelli) and doesn’t want to marry the high-society control freak his family has set him up with.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the British comedian is developing the "Arthur" remake for Warner Bros.
The original is old enough to not be familiar to many. Who for Liza's role and the butler? Mabye Anne Hathaway and Ian McKellan? Ian saying "Would you like me to wash your dick?" would have a special resonance, don't you think? LOL

Russell Brand comments on Pirates 4 rumor
MTV got this reaction from Russell Brand to the rumor that he might play Captain Jack Sparrow's brother in Pirates 4:
“I’ve seen some talk about that matter but I think they’re still writing the script,” he said. And of course, then Brand launched into a riff that makes you wonder how far he will go for his art should the role pan out. “I am having a skull and crossbones tattooed on each of my nipples in anticipation of the plotline. I just hope it doesn’t affect my other work in Jane Austen adaptations.”
Here's hoping the rumor pans out!

Russell Brand Captain Sparrow's brother?
Could this news be more perfect? This is putting whip cream and a cherry on my day!!
From WENN:
British comic Russell Brand is reportedly in negotiations to join the cast of the fourth Pirates Of The Caribbean movie.
The Forgetting Sarah Marshall star is rumoured to be in line to play the brother of Johnny Depp's character, Captain Jack Sparrow.
A source tells U.K. newspaper The Sun, "There couldn't be a role more perfectly suited. There's a lot of Jack Sparrow in his mannerisms and behaviour. Depp's accent isn't a million miles away from Russell's either.
Russell joining the Sparrows alongside Johnny and Keith Richards as their dad will complete the ultimate on-screen pirate family..

Bedtime Stories - with Russell and Adam
Janene alerted me that we don't have to wait until 2009 to see Russell. He's in Adam Sandler's upcoming Bedtime Stories due out Christmas Day. Adam and Russell in the same movie -- could be some very, very funny mayhem!
Russell Brand is Tempest's Jester
Just read this today in my EW:
Perhaps it's redemption for being kicked out of the prestigious Drama Centre London a week shy of graduation. Or maybe it was just too juicy a part to turn down. Whatever the reason, this year's outrageous host of MTV's Video Music Awards, Russell Brand, will play drunken jester Trinculo in Julie Taymor's adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest. The British-born comic will appear opposite Helen Mirren, who stars as Prospera (Taymor's version of Prospero), and Alfred Molina as Sebastian. Jeremy Irons (King Alonso), Geoffrey Rush (Gonzalo), and Djimon Hounsou (Caliban) are also in negotiations to join the cast. Taymor (Across the Universe) has directed the Bard's island-set play twice on stage, but in November, she plans to take her shoot to Hawaii.
From The Guardian:
Russell Brand last week revealed his secret plan to seduce Helen Mirren. Adopting that familiar "naughty little me" persona, Brand told reporters at the Pride of Britain awards: "There's something about her that drives me wild. She's so sexy and enchanting, just look at her form ... They're going to have to hold me back when we start work. I'll be all over her. I don't know how I'll get any work done."Russell also has an upcoming one hour special on Comedy Central in 2009, that will tape next month in New York City. I'm looking forward to seeing his standup routine madness.

Russell Brand on VMA's
I thoroughly enjoyed Russell Brand's monologue on the VMA's last night. "My persona don't really work without fame. Without fame this haircut could be mistaken for mental illness." LOL! The crowd seemed stunned that he would talk politics, and refer to Bush as that "retarded cowboy fellow." One of his best lines was referring to Bristol Palin's boyfriend:
Again and again, Brand _ a confessed former sex addict _ poked fun at young sex and abstinence. Speaking of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's daughter's boyfriend and would-be father, Levi Johnston, Brand sympathized with him: "That is the safe sex message of all time. Use a condom or become a Republican!

Russell Brand and what NOT to say
I've been warned when I'm presenting there are two things I am never allowed to say. One - cunt. And two - Scientology. There is one sentence that could join both of those words but I'm going to try and not say it. I have a problem when people tell me not to do something. When I was going to meet the Queen the protocol people told me how to bow, not to curtsy, not to speak until I was spoken to. But all I could think of was, 'Grab her tit'!"- Russell Brand, on hosting the MTV VMAs next month

Russell Brand to host MTV Awards
After seeing Forgetting Sarah Marshall, the actor who made the most impression on me was the hilarious Russell Brand. MTV has just announced that he will be hosting the MTV Video Music Awards in September. While not very well known yet in the US, he's been working as a VJ for MTV in England.
Brand told the AP that he hadn't started thinking about how he would approach the assignment _ not that there's much planning to be done for the infamously anything-goes show.
"I've just been invited to do it," Brand said in a telephone interview from London. "It'll be good to preside over what is sure to be only vaguely coordinated televised insanity."
Not that chaos or improv a problem for the 33-year-old comedian.
"That's how I've made my name in this country: Flying very much by the seat _ and the crotch _ of my pants."

Forgetting Sarah Marshall - mini-review
I have never watched an episode of How I Met Your Mother, so I had no idea who the star, Jason Segel of Forgetting Sarah Marshall was when I saw the film last week. It had the brand stamp of "produced by Judd Apatow", and therefore you kind of know what you're in for. Something raunchy, laugh out loud funny and not just a little bit sweet. Forgetting Sarah Marshall is all those things and Jason Segel is not only a very good writer, but he is one brave man. (I didn't realize till the credits that he also wrote the film.) You've probably heard by now that one of the opening scenes has Peter (Segel) standing full frontal nude as his girlfriend Kristen Bell (of Heroes) breaks up with him. FULL frontal and hilarious. Yes, this is an R film, but can you remember a guy being naked in a film showing all since, well, Richard Gere in American Gigolo? Mark Wahlberg's prosthetic schlong in Boogie Nights doesn't count. I whispered to my friend "Equal time!!", and it's about time, dammit! Peter's girlfriend Sarah keeps asking him to get dressed, and he refuses, saying if he puts his pants on then it will be real that she's leaving him.
Peter is devastated by the breakup, and goes to Hawaii on vacation to forget, but guess who is at the same resort with her British rocker boyfriend. Minor characters are played by actors from the Apatow stable -- Paul Rudd as a hilarious stoner surfing instructor, and Jonah Hill as restaurant host and uber fan of the rocker. The breakout performance is Russell Brand as rocker Aldous Snow. I have never seen this actor before, and let me tell you, this guy will be getting some major work from this film. He is a riot, and even Peter can't hate him.
My friend put her finger on the whole movie. She said as the credits were rolling, "That was a chick movie! Peter acted just like a chick would to a breakup." It's very true. This is a movie about a guy, but in reversing the roles it could have been the plot of any number of chick flicks, which was interesting. Also, I found it interesting that even though it's a broad comedy, no one was a stereotype, and you can't fully hate or dislike anyone. Even the ex-girlfriend, who in many movies would be a two-dimensional bitch, has real reasons for the breakup. And her rocker promiscuous boyfriend even Peter says is too cool to hate.
I really liked this movie, and highly recommend it. I give it three and a half stars. It was already playing at the cheap theater in our town, but is definitely one to watch for on DVD. Jason Segel is a talented writer as well as an actor, and I just read that he is penning a new Muppet Movie! Jason will be rejoining Paul Rudd in I Love You Man out in 2009.
Watch the Reel Geezers on Forgetting Sarah Marshall. They didn't both love the film, but caught the exact same chick flick vibe that we did. Watching them discuss the nude scene is a riot! Warning -- Spoilers in their review!
