Actor Gabriel Byrne abused as a child

I have always adored actor Gabriel Byrne, and I especially love his tortured character as a therapist on the HBO series In Treatment.

Gabriel recently did a lengthy interview on Irish television, and discussed his religious childhood, and unfortunately, his abuse at the hands of priests.  You can watch the whole interview here .
Byrne, 59, went to seminary at age 11 to begin studying to be a priest, and he lasted 4 1/2 years.
"Unfortunately, I experienced some sexual abuse," he said. "It was a known and admitted fact of life amongst us that there was this particular man, and you didn't want to be left in the dressing room with him. There were certain boundaries, sexual boundaries, that were crossed... I didn't feel that i suffered at the time.. It took many years to come to terms with it and to forgive those incidents that I felt had deeply hurt me."
"Again, I didn't think it severely impacted me at the time. But I suppose when I think about my later life, and how I had difficulties with certain issues, there is the real possibility they could have been attributable to that."  He later talked about his own battle with alcoholism.
He also said while, "I was beaten very regularly," he has never laid a hand on his two children, whom he had with ex-wife Ellen Barkin.
He left the seminary when he discovered women and felt more excitement for the female form than he ever had for the priesthood.

Golden Globes Reaction

I was thrilled that Colin Farrell won for Best Actor Comedy for In Bruges. I adored that film, and thought he was possibly his best ever in it. He seemed genuinely surprised. It was a huge night for Slumdog Millionaire with 4 wins. Heath Ledger's posthumous win for The Dark Knight was expected, but Kate Winslet nabbing TWO statuettes was a stunner. She seemed totally shocked to win the second, the Best Actress for Revolutionary Road. I haven't seen either of her films yet, but they've just come to my local multi-plex. Still hoping The Wrestler will come out to the 'burbs, too, as Mickey Rourke won Best Actor, Drama.

A huge night for HBO, too, with multiple wins for John Adams, Laura Dern for Recount (yeah!), Gabriel Byrne for In Treatment (double yeah!) and shocker Anna Paquin for True Blood! Squee! Fun night!

Hope Davis & John Mahoney In Treatment

This is great news. I religiously watched HBO's In Treatment with Gabriel Byrne. Okay, I really religiously DVR'd it and watched it in marathons. Not only was it picked up for a second season, but they've really made me excited about the new patients. They snagged John Mahoney and Hope Davis, two of my favorite character actors, both extremely talented. I'm going to be doing cartwheels watching Gabriel Byrne spar with both of them.

"Treatment" chronicles the weekly sessions of psychoanalyst Paul Weston (Gabriel Byrne) with several of his regular patients as well as his weekly visits to his own therapist, Gina Toll (Dianne Wiest).

Davis will play Mira, a high-powered malpractice lawyer and a former patient of Weston's who blames him for being single and childless. The actress, next appears in "Synecdoche, New York."

Mahoney ("Frasier") will play Bill, a self-confident CEO who finds his life getting away from him.
