The Time Traveler's Wife - Mini-review

I saw The Time Traveler's Wife a week ago with a group of mostly women. We had all read the book, most of us years ago when it first came out, but a couple had just finished the book in the last month. So, I can't review this movie from the point of view of someone unfamiliar with the story. I knew what was going to happen, and those parts of the film that may have been confusing to someone who hadn't read it, I mentally filled in from my knowledge of the book.
As an adaptation, I think it works very well. It's a 500 plus page book, so yes, there are parts left out. Gone are some of the very harsh things that happen to Henry when he time travels. The problem is that he arrives naked, and he never knows what year it is. Some readers quibbled with other scenes left out, but you can't have everything included in an adaptation. The movie has the spirit of the book, to be sure.
The focus here is on the romance between Henry and Clare. Henry first visits Clare when she is only six, speaking to her from behind a bush and begging for her picnic blanket. Important events are like gravity to Henry, and he travels in time to Clare often.
In all, the movie has the feel of the film The Notebook, also starring Rachel McAdams. Something sad does happen in the end for these true lovers, and they have their difficulties in their relationship as Henry disappears for sometimes days on end. He vanishes on their wedding day, but is saved by an older grayer Henry.
It's a satisfying romance, and fun for debate with all the time travel paradoxes. The time travel rules are quite different than many sci-fi books. Our group also debated after the movie whether Clare ever had a choice, or it was simply destiny.
I give Time Traveler's wife three stars. Definitely worth a rental at least, but I recommend reading the book more (you can just picture Eric Bana naked in your head!)
Curiously, I just read that a TV drama series is being developed for The Time Traveler's Wife for ABC by the creator of Friends. That should be interesting!

Funny People Trailer
I had heard that Funny People, Judd Appatow's next film, would be about stand up comics. This is not the story I was expecting, but I'm intrigued. Love the part mocking Eric Bana's accent! Due out July 31.

Buckle Up...The Wait Is Over - Star Trek Trailer Is Here!!
I have been counting down the hours till I could watch this awesome new trailer for Star Trek in high quality again rather than the camcorder bootleg found on YouTube this weekend. Oh, happy day, it is Monday and it's here, the wait is over. It blew my socks off before Quantum this weekend.
Find it here in high quality, on Apple's Trailer site in Quicktime. Watch it in HD, it's worth it!
How do I love this new trailer? Let me count the ways. J. J. Abrams, you sly devil. The trailer starts out with a speeding 20th century convertible, in chase by with sirens blaring. The kid jumps out of the car at the last minute while the car careens over the cliff. Only then, when we switch to the view of the cop, who appears to be a robot with an air motorcycle, do we realize this is sci-fi. The kid says, "My name is James Tiberius Kirk!" and I whooped inside because now we know it's the Star Trek trailer. Only then do they play the Paramount and Bad Robot logos. One of the coolest openers to a trailer anywhere, and just brilliant.
So many cool flashes go by in quick succession. Simon Pegg as Scotty, "I like this ship. It's exciting!" LOL! Kirk arguing with Spock, "Why don't you make me!" The trailer ends with the very cool and evil looking Eric Bana saying "The wait is over." No, the wait ends in May when this movie finally comes out!
Yes, the movie could still suck, but I am hopeful. I am so hopeful, and whoever edited this trailer together is a genius. I've watched it half a dozen times already!
Update: Finally found the embed code on Awards Daily, and this hilarious comment.
350 years from now, no real progress beyond the Wonderbra. Or the male need to sneak a peek at one. Fascinating.

Eric Bana - Full Frontal!
Got you going, didn't I? Actually, Full Frontal was the name of the sketch comedy show that Eric Bana starred in back in Australia. I was curious if I could find any comedy clips of Eric from back in the day. Do a YouTube search on Eric Bana comedy or Eric Bana Full Frontal and there is a treasure trove of clips. I've picked a couple good ones. Eric's most famous character was evidently Peter or Poida. Can't hardly make out a word he's saying, but the crowd loves it!
Not a sex object? LOL

The Time Traveler's Wife
I was thinking about Eric Bana today after viewing the new Hulk trailer, and I wondered what he's up to. (Still haven't seen The Other Boleyn Girl -- looked like a rental film.) He's starring in The Time Traveler's Wife, due out Christmas Day.It's one of my favorite books. Eric will play a man who travels through time, and he has no control over it. The love story unfolds as he meets his wife, and then meets her as a child and through her life. I can't recommend the book enough. Just excellent writing and a very different, but beautifully told, love story. The Christmas release date may mean they hope for Oscar consideration. I've always admired Eric's work -- he was the best damn thing in Troy besides Brad Pitt's naked bum. Maybe this will be a role that gets him some recognition. He's also in Star Trek, maybe as the villain?
Did you know that Eric Bana started his career as a stand-up comedian in Australia? Kind of hard to picture that with the kind of serious dramatic roles he's done in Hollywood, but I guess he was quite a famous comedian there with his own TV show, and known for his impressions.
New Hulk Trailer!
I don't know what to think about the new Hulk movie. I love Tim Roth, and I think he will be a very worthy opponent. The scene in this trailer where Tim Roth says, "Is that all you've got?" -- Love it! Edward Norton is NOT doing press for this movie due to "creative differences" with the producers. They probably went with a more "commercial" version of the film. And Janene, I DO like Eric Bana, but Ang Lee's Hulk film was a disappointment. Hope the negative buzz about Edward Norton's misgivings don't mean this one sucks.
