Fantastic Mr. Fox - Mini Film Review

This Thanksgiving weekend I saw the best animated film I've seen all year - Fantastic Mr. Fox.  Yes, that includes Up.  I liked the quirky Wes Anderson humor of Fantastic Mr. Fox better, and the stop motion animation you know is all hand-done, which makes it even more amazing.

This has been an interesting year with two unique directors of adult films, with Spike Jonze doing Where the Wild Things Are with live action puppets, and Wes Anderson's amazing tour de force here with Fox.  Anderson's off-beat style seems perfect for a Roald Dahl story.  This story was not one I'd read as a child, so I came in with no preconceived notions.  But the character of Mr. Fox, who schemes the perfect squab-nabbing job at the neighbor's farm is just dead-on perfect for George Clooney, almost reprising Danny Ocean of Ocean's Eleven.  I adored Clooney in this film with his trademark click and whistle.  Everyone is fantastic.  Meryl Streep doesn't have a lot to do as his wife, but of course she's great, as always.  Bill Murray is a lawyer badger, and the "Are you cussing with me?" scene in his office with Mr. Fox where they briefly turn into their wild animal selves just slayed me.

It's most of the regular cast of actors from other Wes Anderson films.  We've got Owen Wilson as a sports coach, but Jason Swartzman as Mr. Fox's son is so like every other offbeat character he's played.  The son who's just a little different, but doesn't know it, like Rushmore, my favorite Anderson film.  Really, Rushmore was the pinnacle for me of Wes Anderson films, and until Mr. Fox none of his other films have quite measured up to that greatness.  I enjoyed them, but not the wayI adore Rushmore and now Fantastic Mr. Fox.

The animation is just superb.  Listen to Wes Anderson's interview with Terry Gross on Fresh Air to get some sense of the painstaking care that went into creating the fur-covered miniatures and stop motion animation.  The color palette is all browns and golds - autumnal colors - because Wes Anderson visited Dahl's writing hut in England at that season, and it's the setting for the book.  Wes Anderson said that animation like this, where he has control over absolutely every part of the look, including every sunset and cloud, is the closest a director can get to being God.  I loved the look of this film.  All that care was worth it.

The story is very fun, as Mr. Fox sort of has a mid-life crisis, going back to his youthful poultry stealing.  The chief mean farmer is voiced by Michael Gambon (Dumbledore), and it took me about half the film to realize that as he is so menacing sounding.  Willem Dafoe plays a Rat, one of Mr. Fox's nemesis.

Mr. Anderson, my hat's off to you. The movie was just a delight.  I give it 4 stars and an enthusiastic recommendation that you must run out and see it in a theater this holiday season.  It is a great film for the whole family.  Kids will love the basic story, and adults will love the subtle adult layers as well.  I adore the hand made feel of it, and I hope Wes Anderson does more family films.  His quirkiness works well in animation and children's stories, like Tim Burton works well for fantastical stories like Alice in Wonderland.

Here's a cool short featurette that shows some of what went into the film behind the scenes, including how they recorded the voices on location at a farm, instead of in a studio as is the case with most animated films:

Up in the Air Trailer

George Clooney plays Ryan Bingham, a 35 year old a career transition counselor at a Denver-based management consulting company, Integrated Strategic Management (ISM). Ryan travels around the country to terminate corporate employees. He does not have a personal life and he numbs himself with sex, booze and drugs. His life on the road comes to a halt when his company downsizes its travel budget. He is required to spend more time at home just as he is on the cusp of a goal hes worked toward for years: reaching five million frequent flyer miles and just after hes met the frequent-traveler woman of his dreams.
This movie is getting a lot of good Oscar buzz. It was a sneak premiere at Telluride and wins raves for George Clooney. Anne Thompson:
Writer-director Jason Reitman (and obsessive airline mile collector) played the crowd like a pro, hoping that the movie would live up to their expectations. He didn’t need to worry. The director, who debuted Juno here two years ago at the same theater, delivers a winner.
Here's another short clip:

Up in the Air will be out December 4th.

Fantastic Fox Featurette

This is a cool featurette about The Fantastic Mr. Fox, but what I find most fascinating is that the voices were recorded outside on farm locations, instead of in the normal recording booths usually used for animated films.

'The Men Who Stare At Goats' Official Trailer HD

WTF?! OMG, look at all the people in this movie!! It has George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Kevin Spacey, and Jeff Bridges (playing the Dude again, with a military uniform!).

Based on true events described in Jon Ronson’s 2004 book of the same title, “The Men Who Stare at Goats” involves a down-on-his-luck reporter (McGregor) who gets more than he bargains for when he meets a special forces agent (Clooney) who reveals the existence of a secret, psychic military unit whose goal is to use paranormal powers to end war as we know it.

George Clooney vlogs from Chad

While on a humanitarian mission to Chad, George Clooney talks about his bathroom and does a hilarious impression of Andy Rooney!

In another video he talks about bunking in the hotel room with Pulitzer-winner Nicholas Kristof. "When you win a Pulitzer, you get to shack up with a two-time Sexiest Man Alive. That seems fair to me."

Review Roundup

I have been remiss in reviewing movies lately. I've been catching up with the new fall TV shows on my DVR, but I have seen a few in the last few weeks that I would recommend.

Tropic Thunder

Tropic Thunder, directed by Ben Stiller, had me laughing like I haven't in a long, long time. My husband did not know the whole setup, and went WTF? when the trailers for the actors started at the beginning. Everyone was hilarious in this, but Robert Downey, Jr. as such a method Australian actor that he surgically alters his skin to play the black soldier had me on the floor. There were so many inside Hollywood jokes and references to just about every war movie made and all the cliches. Tom Cruise was funny, but he didn't have me on the floor like the very un-PC conversation between Stiller and Downey: "Everyone knows you don't go full retard! Ask Sean Penn!" Three and a half stars and a laugh RIOT. If you missed it in theaters, make sure you rent this one.

The Bank Job

The Bank Job is based on a true story from the 1970's of a ham radio operator overhearing a robbery in progress. It's a solid performance by Jason Statham in a more understated role for him. I loved all the 1970's period costumes and sets. Very fun and definitely worth a rental. Three stars.

Burn After Reading

Burn After Reading -- Variety claimed this Coen Brothers film was "too silly." Well, I have to say, that I wasn't on the floor gasping for breath like I laughed in Tropic Thunder, but I chuckled quite a bit. The plot makes no sense, and even the CIA boss says "Get back to me...when it makes sense!" Who cares! The fun of this film is seeing all these actors spoofing themselves and their image. Brad Pitt as a blonde male bimbo is a riot. He steals the film for me like when he rides his BIKE to a meeting with the CIA agent! I loved the little quirks, like George Clooney's character who is a serial adulterer. Each house he enters, he can't help commenting on the floor, even in the midst of seduction. "Is that white maple?" There is a moment of violence that is quite shocking. I know this is a spy spoof and all, but it almost didn't belong in this film, except this is the Coen brothers who brought us the wood chipper in Fargo. Three stars. Great performances by the whole high wattage cast.

Brad Pitt & George Clooney at Burn premiere

Your gratuitous George Clooney pic of the day, with a bonus dollop of Brad, thanks to Just Jared. Burn After Reading had its premiere at the Venice Film Festival, and Variety was unfortunately not overly thrilled in its review. I'll be seeing it anyway, to judge whether it's "too silly" myself.

George Clooney replaces fan's car

George Clooney bought a female fan a new car after damaging her vehicle in an accident.

The Ocean Elevens star was driving in Pennabilli, Italy when he shunted an unnamed woman's car from behind.

Clooney accepted the blame for the incident - and made the generous gesture of giving her a brand new car.

When the woman went to collect her vehicle from the repairers, she discovered the movie star had splashed out $28,000 (GBP14,000) on a new replica of her Lancia Ypsilon model.

And he had even left her a note of apology on the windscreen, saying: "I'm so sorry. Hope you'll forgive me. George Clooney."

Burn After Reading Trailer from Coen Brothers

Just saw this trailer on Just Jared. Holy crap this movie looks funny!! All these people in the same comedy is blowing my mind. After No Country For Old Men, I can understand the Coen Brothers wanting to do a comedy. The release date in the US is September 12!

Just Jared: Check out the new trailer for Burn After Reading, featuring Brad Pitt and the newly single George Clooney.

Plot summer via Wiki: John Malkovich plays Ozzie Cox, a CIA vet who is fired because he is an alcoholic. He takes his revenge by writing some inflammatory memoirs. Cox’s soon-to-be ex-wife Katie (Tilda Swinton) steals the disc containing his memoirs and accidentally leaves it at the gym where it is found by a trainer, Chad Feldheimer (Pitt) and the gym’s owner, Linda Litzke (Frances McDormand). They believe they can use the info to blackmail Cox. Harry Pfarrer (Clooney) is an oversexed, fanatically fit, lactose-intolerant federal marshal who is sleeping with Cox’s wife. He meets Linda via an online dating service and gets entangled in the blackmail scheme, when he stumbles across Chad breaking into his and Katie’s house.

Burn After Reading is due to premiere on August 27 and will open the 2008 Venice Film Festival. The film is the Coen brothers’ first since the Academy Award-winning No Country For Old Men. Watch the trailer below!

George is back on the market, ladies!

Attention, Darling Diva!
Playboy George Clooney has called it quits with model Sarah Larson after nearly a year of dating, reports In Touch.

According to a friend of Sarah’s, the Leatherheads star recently moved out of his L.A. home while the 29-year-old former Las Vegas cocktail waitress removed her belongings.

“George is relieved to be single again,” says an insider. “He thinks Sarah is sweet and that is why it was so hard to break up with her.”

George, 47, and Sarah had struggled to make their relationship work because of their different backgrounds.

“The truth is they had little in common and he just doesn’t want to be tied down,” explains the insider.
