New Amsterdam

I am catching up on my DVR viewing after a very busy time. I finally got around to watching New Amsterdam that appeared on FOX after the Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles finished its run. There are only 8 episodes, but I just love this Danish actor, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. I'm not going to try to sell you that this is the best show in the world. The cop procedural part of the shows are nothing new. What is different is the premise -- this guy is 400 years old. He's immortal because he took a sword to save a Native American woman, and she granted him life until he meets "the one." It's a romance plot that is familiar theme to many reading recent romance novels. The little historical details he sprinkles into the dialogue -- noting that he found a secret rave place because it used to be a speakeasy -- are fun, and I love his relationship with his 65-year old African-American son, Omar. Amsterdam even makes "antique" furniture to supplement the family coffers.

I love all the flashbacks to his previous lifetimes, but his romance with the ER doctor he thinks might be the one is what really drew me back to watch. Why am I telling you about a show that has finished it's TV run for the season? All 8 episodes are available to watch free online here. Nikolaj is a dreamboat, and his Danish accent bleeds through occasionally, but that's okay as the character is supposed to have emigrated from Holland 400 years ago! Take me to your "willage"!

I hope this show gets renewed. What a screwy truncated TV season -- it only got 8 bloody episodes! Whatever FOX decides, I hope we see more of Nikolaj. Looks like he's had minor parts in some Hollywood films like Kingdom of Heaven and Black Hawk Down. I hope at least the exposure he got from this show will lead to bigger and better things for him.
