Ang Lee's Taking Woodstock Trailer

Wow. Ang Lee doing a comedy?! Got some great people in this one.

Nicolas Cage is The Sorcerer -- I kid you not

The Rock in a remake of Escape From Witch Mountain. This, I can deal with. Nicolas Cage as the frickin' Sorcerer in a remake of the famous Sorcerer's Apprentice Mickey Mouse cartoon from Fantasia??!! Are you f***ing kidding me? Just look at this picture. The man has become a parody of himself.

I can't help but agree with Cinematical:

...Nicolas Cage as the sorcerer, who is apparently ripping his look off Hugh Jackman's Gabriel Van Helsing. All that's missing is Kate Beckinsale, a crossbow, and a conditioning treatment to better copy Jackman's flowing locks. Once he gets those, my attraction to Jackman's fedora will be quenched.

The only thing that has me curious about this movie is how Baruchel ends up as his apprentice. Because if I was approached by a "magician" who looked like that, I'd run screaming the other way.

Cast of Greek Gods for 'Percy Jackson'

My kids adore the books of Rick Riordan about the half-human children of Greek Gods. I've read the first one, The Lightning Thief and it is great. My sister even gave my kids home made Camp Half-Blood t-shirts for Christmas.

Chris Columbus, director of the first two Harry Potter movies, is directing the first book and 'Percy Jackson' is due out in February of 2010. Percy will be played by Logan Lerman who was in 3:10 to Yuma. Check out the cast of Greek Gods:

Fox has pieced together a little ensemble cast of Greek Gods for their fantasy adventure Percy Jackson for director Chris Columbus (Harry Potter and Sorceror’s Stone). Already signed on are Uma Thurman as Medusa, Pierce Brosnan as Chiron, Sean Bean as Zeus, Kevin McKidd as Poseidon and Melina Kanakerides as Athena. Joining them are Logan Lerman and Brandon Jackson with the roles of Aries, Hades and Persephone still left to be cast.

The film centers on Poseidon’s 12-year-old half-human son (Lerman), who embarks on a quest across modern-day America to save his mother, return Zeus’ stolen lightning bolt and prevent a deadly war between the gods.

Uma Thurman as Medusa will be great, and I hope they keep the setting of the book, where she has a cottage in New Jersey with a yard filled with garden gnomes!

The fifth and final book in the series comes out later this spring. Could this be the next big family friendly series like Harry Potter?

Update - Logan Lerman is also in Gerard Butler's Game! The kid gets around!

Italian Trailer for Gerard Butler's Game

Gerard Butler's film Game is due out September 4th and also stars Michael C. Hall, Alison Lohman, and John Leguizamo. Game is written and directed by the same guys who made Crank - Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor.

Set in a future-world where humans can control other humans in mass-scale, multi-player online gaming environments, a star player (Gerard Butler) from a game called "Slayers" looks to regain his independence while taking down the game's mastermind.

Can't understand the dubbed Italian, but we get a glimpse of the action and look of the movie:

Color me pumped!

Update - my son just let me know that the kid in this film is the same one starring in Percy Jackson!

Farrelly Brothers to Make Three Stooges Film

I am nearly speechless after reading the cast.

Studio has set Sean Penn to play Larry, and negotiations are underway with Jim Carrey to play Curly, with the actor already making plans to gain 40 pounds to approximate the physical dimensions of Jerome 'Curly' Howard.

The studio is zeroing in on Benicio Del Toro to play Moe.

Okaaaaay. Jim Carrey as a Stooge brother -- easy to see. Benicio was funny in Snatch, so sure. But Sean Penn as LARRY??!! He hasn't done a comedy in at least 10 years!!! Literally! I was reminded of his Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High as someon dressed as his character this weekend at an 80's fundraiser. Doesn't it feel like that was a million years ago that he was that funny?

Whoo boy, but the Farrelly Brothers have that way about them.

Christopher Walken Twitters

cwalken

Christopher Walken twitters. Who knew? And it's hilarious! Here are some of his recent posts:

There's a kid on a Pogo stick in front of my house. It's nearly midnight so let's assume he's been drinking. This should end well for him.

The Pope is in Africa "reaffirming the ban on condom use." His old stuff was funnier. I don't get this new material. Too edgy for my taste.

A dog walked by wearing a frilly sweater. The neighbor kid laughed and said, "That's gay!" He meant the cardigan, I think. Not the dog.

She said, "What if you really are you?" and that blew my mind. Okay, it didn't blow my mind. It feels like a good answer though.

No. I'm not really Tina Fey. That was an odd question but I applaud its random nature.

I buy a bottle of Green Tea with ginseng nearly every day but I don't remember why. I don't like tea and can barely taste the ginseng.

A kid was just now crying about a leaking balloon. I told him it was going to pop eventually anyway. He said, "Shut up, mister!" Smart kid.

A curious man asked if I was waiting for something as I stood on the curb. I said, "No. I'm ice fishing." Oddly enough he accepted that.

Tina Fey is a handsome woman and I can tell she knows that. Mickey Rourke would seem to think that he's a handsome woman as well. He's not.

ROFLMAO!!!

Remembering Natasha Richardson

I have been following the story of Natasha Richardson's tragic accident since Tuesday night, praying that the reports that she was brain dead weren't true. She and Liam Neeson were totally devoted to each other and were married for almost 15 years. They have two boys, 13 and 12. Natasha Richardson was the daughter of Vanessa Redgrave, but made her own way as an actress. She won a Tony on Broadway play Sally Bowles in Caberet. She and Liam starred in an O'Neill play together and also in the movie Nell.

In reading about her career, I forgot that she starred in The Handmaid's Tale, based on the book by Margaret Atwood:

In Nell, she starred along with Liam and Jodie Foster. She and Liam married shortly after filming.

I loved her as the mother in Parent Trap, back when Lyndsey Lohan was talented.

She starred in the movie Evening, playing the daughter of her real life mother Vanessa Redgrave.

She was due to act in a play with her mother later this year.

What a tragic loss, and one can't help but think about Liam Neeson's role in Love Actually as a man who loses the love of his life and is left with a son to raise. My heart breaks for him and their two sons.

Ron Silver in Memoriam - RIP

Ron Silver was a terrific character actor who was in over 80 movies and TV shows including Silkwood, Ali, Reversal of Fortune, West Wing and on and on. One of my favorites was as Alan Dershowitz in Reversal of Fortune:

And one of my favorite lines from the movie is when Silver as Dershowitz says to Jeremy Iron's Von Bulow: "You're a very strange man."
And he replies, "You have no idea."

It's Cooper to head up Sundance

After the departure of Geoff Gilmore to Tribeca, the Sundance Film Festival has promoted programmer John Cooper, a 20-year Sundance vet, to the post of Director of the Festival. Like there was any doubt! John Cooper is amazingly talented, and I can say, a very nice guy, as I've had the pleasure of talking with him a couple of times.

Read about it in Variety.

The new director "brings to the position an infectious enthusiasm as well as a deep understanding of the Sundance brand and culture," founder Robert Redford said.

Eclipse Director is Orphanage's Bayona

Thank God! Today Summit announced the director for Eclipse, the third movie in the Twilight series. Drew Barrymore's name had been floating around, and she had confirmed that she was in consideration. I hope that was Summit just being polite, because while I don't doubt that she is has talent -- she produced the Charlie's Angel films and He's Just Not That Into You -- I was praying that they wouldn't seriously entrust her with a franchise film like this. She has shown no ability to do anything more than light action comedy or rom com work. Let her cut her teeth on more serious drama and horror elsewhere, but not with the Twilight series, please!

So, I was thrilled when I read yesterday that Juan Antonio Bayona, the Spanish protege of Guillermo Del Toro, had been signed to direct Eclipse. Bayona directed the critically acclaimed horror film, The Orphanage, which was produced by Del Toro. I haven't seen the film, but I feel much better that someone with experience in arty horror is up for Eclipse. Bayona is a hot property so kudos to Summit for snatching him up. Eclipse already has a release date of June 30, 2010.

Curse of the Black Freighter clip!

EW has posted two new clips from the Curse of the Black Freighter Watchmen companion DVD due out later this month:

Warner Bros. has a treat: a companion DVD to the film coming out on March 24, titled Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter.

Also on the DVD is a second companion film called Under the Hood. Running a little longer at 38 minutes, this mini-flick is staged like an old episode of a 60 Minutes-style show called The Culpeper Minute, which takes a nostalgic look back to the early days of the Minutemen -- the masked heroes/vigilantes who preceded the Watchmen.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is set for release on May 28, 2010 and is based on the video game - set in medieval Persia, Earth’s mightiest and most mysterious kingdom, where a king and his son defeat the powerful Maharajah and kidnap his daughter, looting his palace of priceless treasure, including an extravagant hourglass, and a mysterious dagger.

In Defense of the Blue Penis

Andrew Sullivan pointed me to this interesting take on Dr. Manhattan's full frontal nudity in Watchmen from Phoebe Connelly of The American Prospect:

I'd like to stand up in defense of superhero Dr. Manhattan's full-frontal blue nudity. The majority of reviews have seen fit to mention it: Anthony Lane, "buff, buck naked, and blue, like a porn star," Roger Ebert, "complete with discreet genitalia," Kenneth Turan, "pale blue and naked (don't ask)," NPR, "As he lacks a spandex suit — or for the most part a suit of any sort — full-frontal shots of him also qualify as blue, come to think of it."

But getting worked up over the blue penis is a failure to notice the rest of the film. A female superhero, Silk Spectre II, is outfitted in a latex body suit with perma-hard nipples, there's a horribly cheesy sex scene set to "Hallelujah," and your overshare problem is the glowing blue penis?

We're comfortable with objectified male bodies when they are a joke, but not when it's merely a part of a character -- the way female nudity, particularly in action films, so often is.

So yes to the blue penis. Let's hope it makes people pause to consider why it's discomfiting to have male nudity displayed, not for laughs, and not part of some art house epic, but just as a side-bit character trait that no one seems to remark on.

500 Days of Summer

This film had major buzz at this year's Sundance Film Festival, but unfortunately I didn't get a chance to see it then. Fox Searchlight snatched it up, and we can all see it July 24th!

Public Enemies Trailer Out!

Ah, the famous La Salle Street Canyon in Chicago! My husband works a couple blocks from here. You've seen it in the Dark Knight movies, too.

I can't wait to see this film, partially because they filmed a lot of it in the Chicago area. The trailer looks amazing:

Directed by Michael Mann (Heat), Public Enemies tells the real-life story of gangster John Dillinger (Depp), and how, due to his (and his pal's) multi-state crime spree during the 1930s, the US government had no choice but to create the FBI -- whose top agent, Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale), was the one assigned to finally track down Dillinger and bring him to justice. The film also stars Oscar winner Marion Cotillard, Channing Tatum, Giovanni Ribisi, and Billy Crudup.

Zack Snyder's next all girl project - Sucker Punch

Regardless of how well or poor ‘Watchmen’ does, Zack Snyder already has his next project lined up and ready to go. It will be the $100 million-budget, ’60s-based, all-girl, action fantasy ‘Sucker Punch’. Now, according to EW, the film has its cast.

Amanda Seyfried is in final negotiations to play the lead role of Baby Doll, a young woman who has been committed to an insane asylum and fantasizes about escaping with the help of her fellow inmates, who take on fantastical roles in her mind.

Offers are also out to Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish, Evan Rachel Wood, and Emma Stone to round out the cast.

Says Snyder about the cast, “I already did the all-male cast with ‘300′, so I’m doing the opposite end of the spectrum.”

Coolio! Say what you will about Mamma Mia, but Amanda Seyfried has been doing amazing work on Big Love.
