Teaser Trailer for Del Toro's Novel The Strain
Guillermo del Toro's new novel The Strain, book one of a trilogy, is due out on June 2 and you better bet I've got it on pre-order.
Del Toro tells Wired, ""I'm not good at forensic novels. I'm not good at hazmat language and that CSI-style precision. When [Bram] Stoker wrote Dracula, it was very modern, a CSI sort of novel. I wanted to give The Strain a procedural feel, where everything seems real."

Daniel Craig AND Hugh Jackman in Broadway Play!
I had a very difficult afternoon, but my husband gave me the best news when I got home. I thought Hugh Jackman was going to do a musical next on Broadway, maybe a Carousel revival or a new play about Houdini. Instead, he's doing a serious play about two Chicago cops with Daniel Craig, in Craig's Broadway debut!! You better believe I will be flying to NYC to see this one!!!
From the Chicago Suntimes:
Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman are set to star in Keith Huff's play "A Steady Rain" slated for this fall. They’re playing Chicago cops, no less. In what’s perhaps the ultimate good cop/bad cop scenario, the drama tells the story of two best friends and partners who — after answering a call about a domestic dispute in an inner-city neighborhood that results in the accidental death of a boy — find their friendship put to the ultimate test. The play won several local theater awards in its run in Chicago in 2007.
The NY Post reports:
Craig, whose Bond movies "Casino Royale" and "Quantum of Solace" are among the highest grossing films of all time, will be making his New York stage debut. He started off in the theater in London, playing bit parts, but he has not appeared in a play in several years.Hey, I'd love to see Hugh do another musical, but I'll take whatever he has on offer. I sat third row center for Boy From Oz, and it is a night I will never forget. Hugh Jackman is simply amazing and he doesn't always need to have metal claws to get me to buy a ticket. A play about two cops doesn't sound like Hugh and Daniel will be shirtless, but we can still hope!
Jackman won a Tony Award in 2004 for his role as Peter Allen in "The Boy From Oz."
Although the musical received mixed reviews, Jackman became a box-office sensation, shaking a pair of maracas and flouncing around the stage in tight leopard pants.
"The Boy From Oz" regularly grossed more than $1 million a week. Jackman became the most sought-after leading man in the theater, though he's turned down every offer to star in another show until now.
"Everybody wanted him to do a musical, but he wanted to do a serious play," a theater source says. Theater sources say Craig and Jackman have the potential to match Broadway's biggest box- office champ, Julia Roberts, who sold over $10 million worth of tickets in just 12 weeks in the play "Three Days of Rain" in 2006.
Although "A Steady Rain" is harsh and harrowing, one Broadway wag predicted that even those theatergoers whose tastes run to splashy musicals will want to see it.
Said the wag: "Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman in police uniforms? All the boys will be there!"

'Ferris Bueller' House up for sale for $2.3 million
The Highland Park house made famous by the 1986 movie "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" is for sale.
The architecturally stunning, art-filled, 5,300-square-foot house went on the market last week for $2.3 million. Its most famous feature is its steel and glass "pavilion" that hangs over the ravine.
In the movie, an angry Cameron Frye sends his father's rare Ferrari through its glass walls and into the woods.
"There's been a lot of interest in it already," says Sudler Sotheby's International Realtor Meladee Hughes (no relation to movie director John Hughes). "It's spectacular inside. It's like living in a tree house."
The pavilion contains a wall of memorabilia dedicated to the movie, including pictures of actors Matthew Broderick and Alan Ruck taken during the filming, Hughes said.
The owners were avid car collectors and the space is still used for special car events, such as a Ferrari Club meeting held there last weekend.
John Hughes, who still lives on the North Shore, has been informed that the house is for sale but so far they have not heard from him.
You can see more pictures of the house at the realtor's site.

Role Models - Mini-review
Rented this last week, and highly recommend this laugh riot. Paul Rudd was one of the writers of the script, and I just love anything he does. He could read the phone book with his sarcastic mug, and I'd eat it up. Paul Rudd's character loses his cool in a spetacular way after 10 years in a dead end job, and has to do over 100 hours of community service. He and his friend, played by Sean William Scott of Stiffler fame, are sent to a Big Brother type organization and given two of the toughest kids to mentor. Rudd gets a lonely nerd played by the kid who was McLovin' in Superbad, and Sean William Scott gets the most foul mouthed little kid you can possibly imagine. Jane Lynch, who has been one of Christopher Guest's regulars (she was in Best of Show as a dog trainer), plays the head of the Big Brother organization and a former drug addict. She had me on the floor laughing in scenes like this: "You think I'm a pushover? I used to eat cocaine for breakfast!"
I am so thrilled she has a part of the new dramedy Glee on Fox. She was hilarious in as the cheerleading coach: "You think this is hard! Try waterboarding! That's hard!" If you missed the preview after American Idol, you should check Glee out online here.
So, Role Models is three stars and most definitely worth a rental. Hilarious, and you can't beat a full on live action role playing battle scene! Yeah, the two guys grow up through their relationships with the kids, but it never gets overly sweet or maudlin. Really good writing, and the supporting characters are all top notch.

Robert Pattinson in Cannes
The insanity of a photo shoot in Cannes. Robert Pattinson is in France to promote Remember Me.
UPDATE:
It has just been announced that Robert will begin shooting Bel Ami soon. From Variety:
...is set to begin lensing in four or five weeks, although the female lead is yet to be cast. "The girl needs to be literally inspirational," said Pattinson of a catalytical element of the film. To be directed by Allen Coulter, film was scripted by Jenny Lumet. "I have no qualms saying that she's a genius," Pattinson laughed, adding that the script really connected with him when he first read it -- even some of the dialogue sounded "the way I speak."

First Clip of Heath Ledger in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
Jude Law, Colin Farrell and Johnny Depp finished out the filming in Heath's role. It will be interesting to see the reaction to this last film of Heath Ledger.
This clip was shown to opening night audiences at Cannes.
The film, set in the present day, follows the immortal 1,000-year-old Doctor Parnassus (Christopher Plummer) as he leads a travelling theatre troupe that offers audience members a chance to go beyond reality through a magical mirror in his possession. Members of the troupe include a sleight of hand expert, Anton (Andrew Garfield), and a dwarf, Percy (Verne Troyer); Parnassus had been able to guide the imagination of others through a deal with the Devil (Tom Waits), who now comes to collect on the arrangement, targeting the doctor’s daughter (Lily Cole). The troupe, which is joined by a mysterious outsider named Tony (portrayed by Heath Ledger, Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell), embark through parallel worlds to rescue the girl.
Michael Sheen cast in new comedy - Submarine
Michael Sheen and Paddy Considine have boarded Richard Ayoade's coming-of-age laffer "Submarine."
Project is being developed by Ben Stiller's Red Hour Films and U.K. shingle Warp Films. Film4 is co-financing the pic, which is set to start shooting in August.
Story follows a 15-year-old boy who aspires to lose his virginity before his next birthday, while trying to prevent his mother from leaving his father for her dance teacher.
Paddy Considine was in Bourne Ultimatum.
Hmmmm. Michael Sheen in a comedy? I'll bite. Wonder if he's the father or the dance teacher!
Chris Hemsworth to star as Thor
We would never have had a clue who the heck Chris Hemsworth was just a few weeks ago, but after his short but memorable splash onscreen as Capt. Kirk's father, George Kirk, he has nabbed the role of Thor. He's also been cast in the Patrick Swayze role in the remake of Red Dawn.
He's a 25 year old from Australia, continuing the tradition of American manly men being found on foreign soil. Hemsworth certainly made an impression on me, in that opening sequence of Star Trek. As Bruce Greenwood's Capt. Pike put it, "[He] was captain of a starship for 12 minutes and, in that time, saved 800 lives."
Production is expected to begin next year on Thor, with Marvel shooting for a May 20, 2011 release.
I still can't get over the fact that Kenneth Brannagh, of all people, is directing Thor. Kenneth Branagh has described Thor as "a human story right in the center of a big epic scenario." Samuel L. Jackson will also star.

Game of Thrones comes to HBO
When I heard about this, I did my little happy dance. 'Game of Thrones' is acknowledged as one of the best works of fantasy fiction. It's part of a 7 book epic series, "A Song of Ice and Fire," by author George R. R. Martin.
From Hollywood Reporter:
Tom McCarthy has come aboard to direct HBO's fantasy pilot "Game of Thrones," on which the star of his first feature, "The Station Agent's" Peter Dinklage, has been tapped for a key role.
Peter Dinklage is author Martin's dream casting for the role of Tyrion, the Queen's brother who is treated as an outsider because of his size. Tyrion is one of the most interesting characters I've ever seen in a fantasy novel, and Peter Dinklage will be just fantastic in the part.
From Wikipedia:
Tyrion is a misshapen dwarf nicknamed "The Imp" and "The Halfman". As a fan-favorite character, he is the personal favorite of the series' author George R. R. Martin as well.[1] Though Tyrion shares his father's talent for political maneuvering, he receives little respect from Tywin because of his deformity, sharp tongue, penchant for whoring, and the death of his mother during his birth. He is capable of cruelty to his enemies, but also has great sympathy for fellow outcasts and the mistreated.
HBO has greenlit the filming of a pilot in Northern Ireland later this year.
The Road (Trailer 2009)
Finally!! Esquire has called this the "most important film of the year". There is some controversy about this trailer from the Weinsteins as the book by Cormac McCarthy never specifies what apocalyptic event happens.
The film tells the story of a man (Viggo Mortensen) and his young son (Kodi Smit McPhee.) traveling through a desperate, post-apocalyptic world. The flap jacket on the book describes the setting as “burned America.”The film co-stars Robert Duvall and Charlize Theron, and Guy Pearce.

Hugh Jackman and Robert Pattinson in the SAME movie?!
Rachel Weisz and Hugh Jackman ... are set to join the latest young Hollywood heart throb, Twilight’s Robert Pattinson in Unbound Captives, a period drama to be directed by Madeleine Stowe. The film will mark Stowe’s directorial debut and for those that don’t recognize the name, I would say the best role to remind you of her would be her turn opposite Daniel Day-Lewis in The Last of the Mohicans as Cora Munro. Bells ringing now?
Stowe also penned the script for Unbound Captives, which was originally envisioned for her to star in but that was before she was able to land such a stellar cast. Now, Weisz will play the lead female role, a woman whose husband is killed and her two children kidnapped by a Comanche war party in 1859. She is rescued by a frontiersman, to be played by Jackman. Pattinson will play the son.
This may be a film to keep a serious eye on as the Variety article carrying the news says Fox offered her upwards of $5 million for the script with the expectation it would be directed by Ridley Scott and star Russell Crowe, a couple of fellas known for turning in some worthwhile features.
Variety carries a quote from Stowe, talking about turning down the Fox offer, saying, “There was never a moment’s hesitation on my part, but it felt unreal, and I can remember my husband putting a finger across his neck to signal not to take the offer,” Stowe said. “There are moments in life where you need to follow your heart. The script remained my singular focus, but directing it myself wasn’t something I ever dreamed of.”
The film is currently eyeing a year-end production start.
Very cool to have a woman director, and I can very much see Hugh and Rachel in a period piece. Whoo boy! This just made my day!!
Why was young Kirk listening to 'Sabotage' in Star Trek?
This buzz falls in to the category of I don't care if it's true, because it's just too cool!
In the beginning of the Star Trek film, young James T. Kirk has stolen his stepdad's car, and is racing across a field in Iowa, blasting some 'old school' tunes. I didn't catch the song at the time, but it was the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage". Why would that be meaningful, you ask?
Because William Shatner famously cannot pronounce the word 'sabotage'. He says it like sabotaage with the "a" sound like in the word 'at'. Must be a Canadian thing. There is a hilarious audio clip of someone trying to correct him in an voiceover session:
I'm going to choose to think that J. J. Abrams purposefully chose that song to give a little nod to Shatner.
Others wonder if sending a 60's car over a cliff might have other meanings. From /Film:
Abrams chose a 1960s Corvette. Some reports even say it’s a 1966 Corvette, the same year that Gene Roddenberry’s television series began to air.
Could it be that the corvette represents something more than just a fast car? I believe that by throwing the 1960’s era car off a cliff, Abrams was making a statement - “this is not your father’s Star Trek movie” - we’re throwing all that stuff away, off a cliff no less. This is the new Star Trek.” It’s worth noting that my theory originally appeared on the site in November 2008 with the same exact wording, “not your father’s Star Trek movie”, before that line was made the focus of the film’s television campaign.

Star Trek - Movie Review
In a word, Star Trek was "Awesometastic," or at least that's what my 16 year old son called it. He has only the vaguest idea of who Kirk and Spock are, and I'm not sure he's ever seen a full classic episode. He loved it, and that shows that J. J. Abrams has a huge success on his hands. This, unlike many past Star Trek films, is not just for the diehard Trekkies who know all the inside jokes. It's an origin story and a prequel, so while there are plenty of fun Easter eggs for the long time fans, it's a film easily accessible to all the new fans that J. J. Abrams just made for the franchise.
I really have to hand it to the writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. While J. J. Abrams admits that he was not a huge fan of Star Trek, they both obviously are. They have honored the history, while coming up with an ingenious solution to how to revitalize Star Trek. Time Travel and paradoxes are traditional for Star Trek, but I just loved how they worked it to show us these characters we've known for so long, and yet tweak things just enough to make it really interesting. I'm sure the fans will have lots to chew on discussing all the differences from the "canon". They also included all those iconic lines that fans want to hear, but they happened in a very natural part of the story, and never felt forced ("Fascinating"). This movie has fast exciting action, but it's all about the characters and that is what made it really entertaining to me.
Focusing on the origin of Kirk and Spock and their relationship -- totally inspired. Both Zachary Quinto and Christopher Pine had tough jobs and big shoes to fill. I have to say I was really impressed with Christopher Pine. He did not do an impression of Shatner, but made Kirk his own capturing the essence of the character.
But the actor who really surprised me was Karl Urban as Bones. He was just great as Dr. McCoy from that very first scene with Kirk. They took all his history, the divorce, his fear of flying, and just gave him a great cantankerous entrance to the story. Loved it! From the limited films I've seen Urban in (LOTR, Bourne, etc.) I just never would have pictured him doing such a good funny Bones. "I may throw up on you!"
Each main character gets a little moment to shine, and Simon Pegg was my husband's favorite as Scotty. "I like this ship. It's exciting!" Eric Bana's evil Nero was good, but not great. But then, who can match Ricardo Montalban as Khan or the Borg.
Three and a half stars. Huge thumbs up! My husband is a big fan. He even has two phaser rifles and an honest to God Klingon desk from the Christies auction. He loved the movie and believe me, he's a harsh critic. For super fans like him, we just looked at each other several times during the film at the little gifts the writers gave us. Captain Pike was the captain of the Enterprise in the original series pilot and features in the episode "The Menagerie" which has Pike in a wheelchair, and Spock as his former first officer. So cool that Pike was in this origin movie, and at the very end, we noted that he was in a wheelchair in the final ceremony. Just tons of cool touches like that, but still lots of exciting action, too. As the writers said in a recent interview:
I think in its simplest form "Star Trek" has been about naval battles, essentially submarine battles in space, so everything was a bit slow, which is great. It is a wonderful staple of Trek because that forced storytellers to come up with amazing ways for the bridge crew to deal with these problems. Star Wars was about World War II dogfights. As a kid, I loved Trek for the characters, but I loved Star Wars for the speed. But there is no reason why those things should be mutually exclusive. Also, at a practical level, if we going to be introducing Star Trek to a new generation of kids, and given what kids are used to now with Star Wars and Transformers and Iron Man and the speed of those movies, it was going to be very hard to bring them back to a slow naval battle. So we thought must be respectful to the naval battle aspect of the franchise, and yet we can bring something else to it.
I'm looking forward to seeing it again to catch even more Easter eggs! Star Trek has always been about hope and optimism in the future. I think the producers lucked out by releasing this movie at the beginning of Obama's first term. It's a time we could use some more hope and optimism, just like the sixties when the series premiered.
Also, the writers have really opened things up for sequels. Star Trek had gotten rather ossified with over 40 years of history. Now, they could even face familiar situations with different outcomes. Javier Bardem as Khan, anyone?
Trivia note -- J. J. Abrams has been friends with actor Greg Grunberg (Heroes) since high school and finds a way to put him in everything he does. Greg is the voice of Kirk's stepdad on the phone early in the film.

Woody Allen and Larry David -- could this be a marriage made in heaven? I'm excited by the rest of the cast, too: Patricia Clarkson, Ed Begley Jr., Evan Rachel Wood, Henry Cavill, Kristen Johnston, and Michael Mckean. Natalie Portman launches Making Of site
Natalie Portman has just launched a fascinating new website called "MakingOf". It's got lots of interview clips about the behind the scenes of making movies.
Having started acting in films at 11 years old, when friends visit me on set, I am always reminded how intriguing and lucky it is to get to experience filming up close.
When friends come to the set, they always want to know: Who are the many individuals who take part in the making of a film? What do they do? How do they do what they do? How did they get the chance to do what they do? And often: how can I do that too?
These questions led me to believe that there was a desire for this inside look, especially from the vast majority of people who don’t have friends who can take them on set.
It's like a whole site full of what you normally only find on DVD extras. Needless to say I spent a lot of time watching clips already and have it bookmarked.
For people looking to enter the industry, be it as director or stunt guy, there is advice from all kinds of film insiders on how they got in the biz and what they do.

New pic from Law Abiding Citizen
Here's a new pic of Gerard Butler in Law Abiding Citizen. Gerard plays a man who, ten years after his wife and daughter are brutally murdered, returns to extract justice from the assistant district attorney (Jamie Foxx) who prosecuted the case.
The film originally called for him to be the assistant D.A. and Jamie Foxx to play the vigilante bent on avenging his family, but they reversed roles just before filming began.
