Vampires as Gay Men?
Esquire has published a provocative article stating the reason that the current Vampire craze is not like the scary vampires of yesteryear:
Vampires have overwhelmed pop culture because young straight women want to have sex with gay men. Not all young straight women, of course, but many, if not most, of them.
Edward, the romantic hero of the Twilight series, is a sweet, screwed-up high school kid, and at the beginning of his relationship with Bella, she is attracted to him because he is strange, beautiful, and seemingly repulsed by her. This exact scenario happened several times in my high school between straight girls and gay guys who either hadn't figured out they were gay or were still in the closet. Twilight's fantasy is that the gorgeous gay guy can be your boyfriend, and for the slightly awkward teenage girls who consume the books and movies, that's the clincher. Vampire fiction for young women is the equivalent of lesbian porn for men: Both create an atmosphere of sexual abandon that is nonthreatening.
His theory, however, falls apart for all us Twilight Moms, because it wasn't all 12 year olds who read those books and went to the movie. We aren't in it for the gay sex, I don't think, all though I can't speak for everyone. ;) It's the unabashed romanticism that appeals. In this day and age, what the hell can keep lovers apart and keep the sexual suspense going? Historic Romance novels are huge because there were different rules then, and the lovers are not going to fall into bed on page one (or at least mostly). Paranormal Romance is also a huge genre, and it isn't all vampires. There are werewolves, witches, fey creatures and shapeshifters of all kinds. We may not want a macho alpha male in our real life, but it's fun to read about them and vampires and werewolves tend to take what they want, and (maybe) apologize later. I'd bet Stephen Marche hasn't read much adult Paranormal Romance, and I can assure him that most of those adult vampires are anything but gay (J. R. Ward novels excepted.)
I'm not saying vampires have nothing to do with gays. The Anne Rice novels surely held allegories to gays and AIDS, and Allen Ball is pretty explicit in True Blood with drawing parallels to vampire persecution and gays. The GOD HATES FANGS sign is right in the opening credits, and the Church of the Light campaigns against the "vampire lifestyle" in the show. It's there, but it's not the only thing that's there. Vampires are simply about sex, both gay and straight.
Tell me what you think!

Hitler is pissed at HBO
ROFLMAO!!
The wait till next Sunday is killing me!
I have purposefully not been reading the books (which I know are somewhat different anyway) so I will be surprised at every turn. Some things are just HBO special -- "Do I have blood in my hair?" lol
Seriously, could the makers of this film ever realize how many funny mashups would be made out of this Hitler tirade?

Godric from True Blood

Ah, Godric. Taylor Shields has some great photos of a very, very dirty Allan Hyde who played Godric on True Blood. He had a very brief run, but made quite an impact as Eric's maker.
“Probably one of the reasons [True Blood creator Allan Ball] chose me [to play Godric] was this accent,” Hyde has said of his Danish-British (and slight American) tongue. “It was the thing [Ball] liked about it. You can’t track [Godric] back to one place.”We can only hope for some more flashbacks like this one.
Here's a montage of some great Godric scenes from episode 8 of the second season of True Blood. Can you believe this kid is only 20?

Happy Birthday Alexander Skarsgard!

Alex SkarsgÄrd, son of Stellan Skarsgard, gift of Sweden (thank you!), and Eric on True Blood, we wish you happy birthday today.
Seen him in Lady Gaga's Paparazzi video? That's pretty hot, but not as hot as this shower clip from some Swedish film.
There are so many favorite Eric moments from this second season of HBO's True Blood, but this "Is there any blood in my hair?" clip is a classic. The foils!!!

True Blood Opening Credits
My obsession with True Blood extends to the bizarre opening credits. The theme song is "Bad Things" by Jace Everett. Extremely brief nudity, so maybe NSFW.
The rattlesnake strike to the guitar wail is maybe my favorite part. Very cool editing.

True Blood
Sunday night on HBO has once again become must watch TV for me. I am officially totally obsessed with the new series True Blood by Alan Ball (Six Feet Under). The series is based on the books by Charlaine Harris, and in them vampires have "come out of the coffin", as it were, with the Japanese invention of a synthetic blood called Tru Blood. Anna Paquin plays a telepathic waitress in a small Louisiana town, and she is attracted to the vampire (Stephen Moyer) who moves into town, because she can't read his mind.
Now, this is HBO we're talking about so there is hot sex, nudity and violence. Did I mention that it's hot? That Stephen Moyer is hot as Bill Compton, the vampire? HBO has aired two episodes so far, and unfortunately iTunes is not carrying it yet. Watch the trailer below. Yowza!

Hail the Undead Hero
Perez shows us Friday's EW cover!
Vampires are big, very big, in case you didn't know. The fourth book in Stephenie Meyer's vampire book series, Breaking Dawn, comes out the first weekend in August, and the movie Twilight, based on the first book, is due out in December.
Also, in September, HBO's premiering the vampire show True Blood on September 7th.
True Blood is based on a series of novels by Charlaine Harris. It's set in a world where vampires have come out into the open, thanks to the development of synthetic blood that allows them to survive without feeding on humans.
Anna Paquin will star as a mind-reading waitress who's drawn to a vampire who arrives in her small Louisiana town.
